Ward Classes for Children – Ave Maria Oratory

July 31, 2010

Starting in Fall 2010, there is an exciting opportunity for children in Ave Maria and the surrounding area to receive music instruction and training in Gregorian chant through The Oratory at Ave Maria!
Classes teaching music and singing using the Ward method are engaging, fun, help form children in foundational musical skills, and give them an experience of the beauty of the Catholic faith and Gregorian chant.  There is a parent informational meeting on Wednesday, August 25th, and classes begin on Wednesday, September 1st.

Classes will be offered as following:
Each Wednesday from September 1st to December 22nd (except October 13th and December 1st) – Spring semester – January 12 – May 11th.
5-7 year-olds – 6:00 – 6:30 p.m.
8-12 year-olds 6:30-7:30 p.m.

All classes will be held in the choir loft of the oratory unless otherwise announced.

Students will also sing for the following Masses:
Christmas Eve
February 27th – 12:30 Latin Mass
Holy Thursday (April 21st) – Evening Mass

Developed in the early decades of the 20th century, the method teaches children to sing through experiences which help them discover and develop their singing voice and develop fundamental musicianship through movement, conducting, music theory, and improvisation.  The method uses folk songs and the rhythmic work of the Benedictine monks at Solesmes to teach children to sing Gregorian chant.  The classes are an excellent introduction to music and musicianship and can serve to build the foundation for further successful music study (e.g. violin or piano lessons, etc.).  Also, the experience in the class allows children to participate in a children’s choir where they experience the joy of singing the music of the Church with other students.   More information about the method is also available at: http://musicasacra.com/ward-method-instruction/
