St. Malachy Catholic Church, located in Tamarac, Florida, has recently instituted a Traditional Latin Mass. The mass will be offered on the first Sunday of each month at 7:30 a.m.  In April there will not be a Latin Mass on the first Sunday (Palm Sunday), but rather a week later on Easter Sunday. It is a low Mass, for the time being.

St. Malachy is the only parish in Broward County with a perpetual adoration chapel. The parish also offers a Miraculous Medal Novena coupled with Benediction and Rosary each Monday.  Many of the parishioners have been requesting a Mass in the extraordinary form for some years now, and their wish (and prayer) has come to fruition!

The first mass was offered in February. Fr. John Fink offered the Mass while the pastor, Fr. Dominick O’Dwyer, dressed ‘in choir’ led the congregation from the pulpit through the appropriate responses and gestures.  The second Mass was offered in March. This Mass saw Fr. Fink wearing new and very beautiful vestments more consistent with the older form of the Mass.  Both Masses were assisted by two servers who normally serve each week at St. Robert Bellarmine Church in Miami. The two Masses drew huge crowds: about 200 people for the first and around 150 for the second -apparently far more than the regular weekly 7:30 A.M. Mass. The reaction has been very positive from the parishioners as well as from people from other parishes attending.
The tentative long term wish is to have this Mass each week. Fr. O’Dwyer will eventually offer the Mass, and is currently learning and practicing the rubrics to perfect his skills. It is also hoped that a Missa cantata can be offered at some point. For this,  some singers familiar with Latin hymns, chant and the structure of this Mass will be needed. A ‘few good men’ will also be needed as well to train as servers and be available each week.
The parishioners of St. Malachy Church are grateful to Fr. O’Dwyer for bringing this beautiful Mass to the parish, and of course grateful to the Holy Father as well!!
