Chanting the Epistle and Gospel

March 8, 2009

The Fraternal Society of St. Peter has offered an invaluable resource through the website of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary.

On their chant page, you’ll find music scores and recordings of the Epistles and Gospels for the extraordinary form of the Mass.  While the project is still ongoing, it is a little ahead of the liturgical schedule for priests, deacons, and subdeacons currently desirous of learning to chant the readings.

Chanting the readings can play an important role in elevating the liturgy into the realm of the sacred.  When combined with singing the dialogues surrounding the readings, priests can do a good deal in encouraging congregational singing.

Those priests and seminarians who are interested in learning how to chant these and other parts of the extraordinary form of the Mass have an upcoming opportunity to do so at an April workshop in Stamford, CT.  More information can be found here: http://www.musicasacra.com/stamford/.
