Latin Mass in West Palm Beach

March 5, 2009

For the first time since the creation of the Palm Beach Diocese, a Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite was celebrated in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Father Kevin Nelson and the Schola cantorum of the Palm Beaches served the missa cantata for the First Sunday in Lent along with two newly trained young servers at St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Over 100 faithful were in attendance. Another EF Mass will be celebrated by the same schola and priest at St. Christopher Catholic Church in Hobe Sound, FL on March 15 at 2:00pm. At this time, the 3:00 Mass at St Martin de Porres in Jensen Beach continues to be the only regular EF Mass in the diocese, but Fr. Nelson and the schola hope to offer the Traditional Latin Mass and chanted Vespers as often as possible.

The Schola Cantorum of the Palm Beaches provided the Gregorian chants for the Mass. The group, now in its second season, will assist Fr Nelson again on March 15 at 2:00pm at St Christopher’s Catholic Church in Hobe Sound, FL. The group’s next appearance will be at 1st Vespers for the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker on April 30th at St. Patrick’s in Palm Beach Gardens, at 7:00 pm. Anyone interested in joining the group as it continues to serve the Palm Beach Diocese may contact Michael O’Connor at moconnor09@comcast.net.
